Cup 7: Rivers

In Swahili the words for tree and for river are in the same noun class, the class of “spreading things.”

Rivers and trees are sisters in the gathering and spreading of life.

Water enters the roots of trees, flows through the trunk and is dispersed into the air.

Water enters the streams and creeks, flows through the river and is dispersed into the sea.

Trees and rivers support the lives of innumerable beings, and are in turn supported by those lives.

Sociopaths dam rivers and clear cut trees.

Sociopaths call this “conquering nature.”

Trees and rivers call it “suicide.”
